Hoorayyy for Friday!! With only 10 days left until Christmas (!!!!!!!!!!!!) for today’s Friday Favourites, I’m talking all about my favourite Family Christmas traditions. My family has a bunch of traditions we have been doing since I was very young, and I look so forward to them every year. I think the traditions we build and memories from them are the best part of Christmas!
Decoration Tour & Lights Show
I love driving around at this time of year and seeing all of the Christmas lights! There is a house about 20 minutes away from my parents that does an amazing light show every year. The lights are timed to a radio station so we sit in our car listening to the Christmas carols and watch the show. Best part – you never leave your car so you can go in PJs 🙂 I can’t even imagine how long it takes to set up the display each year but I am so glad they do because it’s a definite holiday favourite!
I’ve mentioned my love of Hallmark Christmas movies severalll times, but they aren’t the only Christmas movies I like. Here’s a list of five that we watch every. single. year.
- Home Alone (I usually watch one and two, but two is my fav)
- The Holiday
- Miracle on 34th Street
- I’ll be Home for Christmas (because come on … we all had a crush on JTT .. no?!)
My mom was a big time baker when I was younger and has a huge collection of special Christmas cookies she would make. She doesn’t bake as often anymore, which is for the best for our waistlines 😉 but, her genes rubbed off on my sisters and I, and every year we recreate some of our family favourites. Keep an eye for some of those recipes coming soon 🙂
Christmas Eve Traditions
Every year on Christmas Eve my immediate family gathers at my parents house to spend the afternoon and evening together. The festivities kick off with each of us getting to open one Christmas present from under the tree. Growing up my parents would steer us towards a fun toy that would keep us entertained for the afternoon. Nowadays we each take turns being in charge of getting the Christmas eve gifts, and they tend to be games and puzzles to play as a family, or cozy pajamas to wear the next morning. There’s usually a present or two under there for our pups as well 🙂
Once the gifts are opened it’s time to move onto “dinner”. We always do appetizers only for Christmas eve dinner and it is a definite family favourite! From cheese boards, to pizza bites, spring rolls, and spanakopitas, our Christmas eve spread is always a smorgasbord of the best finger foods!
With snacks in tow, we all gather around the dining table for a game night filled with competition and laughs (and maybe some tears haha)! Some of our family favourites are Dutch Blitz, Ticket to Ride, and Blokus.
Family Gift Steal
My aunt hosts Christmas dinner every year with my whole extended family (about 20 of us), and several years ago we decided to start doing a present exchange. We set the budget at $20 and everyone has to bring one gift for the exchange. Everyone draws a number to see which order we will be selecting gifts in. The first person then selects a gift and opens it. The second person can then decide to choose a new gift, or steal the opened present from the 1st person. Our only rule in terms of gifts is no alcohol only gifts. Gifts with alcohol are okay, but we were getting too many bottles of wine 😉 In an effort to stay creative and come up with new gift ideas every year we’ve had some pretty hilarious presents. The best has to of been the squatty potty last year … not a lot of people stealing that one! HA
