Brrrrr, it’s -13 degrees outside today and I am bundled up in pjs and reading socks under a fuzzy blanket on the couch and I don’t want to go anywhere! This day definitely calls for hot chocolate and I’ve got the perfect recipe for you. This creamy Mexican Hot Chocolate takes traditional hot chocolate to a whole new level with a surprising spicy kick!
Now in recovery mode from the holidays, I tried to keep this hot chocolate on the healthier side by using maple syrup as the sweetener, and cacao powder in place of regular cocoa powder. If you aren’t familiar with cacao powder, it is the raw form of cocoa powder and contains higher levels of nutrients since it has not been processed. Cacao powder is an excellent source of fiber, antioxidants and minerals such as magnesium, iron, and calcium.
A heathy(ish) hot chocolate recipe on a cold day? YES PLEASE! I’m going to crawl back under my blankets and return to my movie marathon. Stay warm my friends!
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tsp maple syrup
- 2 tbsp cacao powder
- 1 pinch salt (approx. 1/4 tsp)
- 1 pinch cinnamon (approx 1/4 tsp)
- 1 pinch cayenne pepper (approx 1/8 tsp)
Combine all ingredients in a mason jar and shake well to mix.
Pour ingredients into a small pot and heat at low/med until it comes to a rolling boil.
Pour into a mug and ENJOY!
